What place has geometry in meditation!?
Tetrahoozies and dodeca-thingys. What?
"Geometry enables its votary, like a bridge, to pass over the obscurity of material nature, as over some dark sea to the luminous regions of perfect reality." – Thomas Taylor
I spent years studying advanced math and physics at two universities. And here’s something I noticed, stay with me, this is brief and meaningful.
Take a square and a circle. The square has a side length of one, and the circle has a diameter of one. Boom, very measurable and understood. BUT, what’s the diagonal of the square? What’s the circumference of the circle? Answers are √2, and Π. Science unapologetically calls these “irrational” numbers. They could be carried out to infinite decimals and we’d never have captured their essence. Wow. That was easy, we’ve just stumped mathematics. This is the male and female. We label something with the male (there, you’re “one”) but the relationship with something else is a feminine thing and not in the realm of math or masculinity. Even if you took a circle and SET that circumference to one, and took a square and SET that diagonal to one, then you’re stuck with an “irrational” (feminine/relationship-based) diameter and side-length.
Geometry doesn’t worry about this. It combines the male and female without trouble, on a very deep level, and does so with lots of beauty.
Now you’ve got half the foundation for why geometry can revolutionize meditation. Here’s the rest.
When people think of numbers they usually think of math or counting. I want you to forget all that and really look at just a few numbers. “One” is something that can be added to “three” is just insulting if you’ve never appreciated numbers.
ONE is a word to convey an idea. “1” changes a lot. Sometimes it’s written thick, thin, short, long, with a line on the bottom, a little dangle on the top left, black on white, white on black, various mediums, just conveying an idea. ONE, as a pure idea, is a big deal. ONE in and of itself is a profound concept without the interference and harmonics of other numbers. ONE is pure unity, ONLY unity, in a sense it’s GOD since it’s purely singularity. It is also all things alone (alONE). Anything alone conjures up some of the essence of the number one deep within us. It’s very powerful. Seeing the shared essence of god and alone-ness one can begin to see that there is no alone, there is all-one. It’s poetic and far beyond math. You can go on and on with the true nature of each digit. It’s huge. But the final point here is that you don’t have to understand the essence of the number – that would be impossible – just understand that the true concept of numbers conveyed via language and symbol is primal, archetypical, and pervades every object (one universe, we have two dollars, one sister…), and even concepts (alone = one, duality = 2…). This is the same for geometry. Geometry is the harmonizing of numbers in relationships/angles. The platonic solids (there’re only five of them) have unique properties and resonate similarly with every single thing we see, feel and do. The tetrahedron is a three sided pyramid, and is the most stable. When you think of your job and your income or you remember sitting in your favorite spot in your favorite climbing tree as a kid, the tetrahedron-aspect of you is energized. These are things of stability. The cube is familiar to us all (also known as a hexahedron) and represents the containing of the three dimensions of earth. When we think of building or forming something, the action-thought rings like a cube. Same vibration. None of this needs to be understood, only know that it exists. You don’t need to know how a car works, but if you think it’s just magic, then you’d be wrong. It CAN be understood, but isn’t necessary. The framework of consciousness rings in octaves that stretch from thoughts and concepts like geometry down to colors of light, smells, sound-waves, touch, and down into matter. We’re archiving these realms of Great Spirit, these harmonics of masculine and feminine through the perspective of geometry. It’s just a really solid and deep alchemy that happens when you allow it to resonate. The five platonic solids can not be created, they can only be discovered and contemplated. They have existed since before we’ve had the eyes to view them and the hands to touch their models.
So don’t be intimidated by the ratios of infinite spirals and the strange references to platonic solids. It’s nothing that needs to be understood. Nobody can do that. Just know that it’s ringing the areas of your consciousness that it’s intended to resonate with. Enjoy!
* I’m going to make a picture that draws out the five platonic solids and the phi ratio, but for now, you can find that stuff elsewhere online if you want.
